Perry's debut solo single was titled "Oh Sherrie". The song was written by Perry, Randy Grum, Craig Krampf and Bill Comer. In 1984, Perry released his first solo album, Street Talk, while still a member of Journey. Due to its similarity to the band's signature sound and performance on the Raising on Radio tour, which turned out to be Perry's last live swan song with the band, the song is often considered the "honor" tour song. The song Perry wrote for his then-girlfriend Shirley Swaford and used in the music video is his biggest solo hit. In 1981, the song's two co-writers and musicians, Bill Cuomo and Craig Krampf, covered Kim Carnes' iconic sex song "Bette Davis Eyes." Perry and Randy Goodrum co-wrote the song "Foolish Heart", which Perry sang on his debut solo album Street Talk. It was the fourth single from the album, released in November 1984. It reached number 2 on the Adult Contemporary chart and number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1985.
The fact that the music video for "Stupid Heart" is shot from start to finish in one continuous motion makes it unique. The stage is a dimly lit room and the camera looks over the balcony railing leading to the stage. Stool and boom microphone in blue spotlights on stage. Perry took the stage, sat down and began the song. Throughout the film, the camera moves towards the stage, focusing briefly on Perry before slowly returning to its original position above the balcony railing. When the song ended, Perry left the stage. Paul Flattery, who produced "Oh Sherrie" and "Strung Out" on "Street Talk," also directed the production of the film.
The film has a different "holiday" ending that is rarely included. In the second camera shot, Perry is seen walking off stage and pointing at the camera. As Perry approached, he was greeted by his Journey colleagues: Neil Schoen, Jonathan Kane, Steve Smith and Rose Valori. The band treated fans to champagne, wishing them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. They left the stage after Perry said, "Let's go record a track." Many see it as a nod to fans that Perry will return to write and perform on Journey.
